Long time peace activist Graeme Dunstan of Peacebus.com has announced that annual 4 July Independence from America Day celebrations will this year take place in Rockhampton.
"The Capricornia Coast is where it will be at for peace activists come early July," he said. "During that time a national Peace Convergence will gather to oppose the biennial US-Australian war games taking place at Shoalwater Bay just north of Yeppoon/Rockhampton."
Over six years ago the Howard government gave the US military pristine coastal rainforest the size of Denmark plus adjacent marine park coral waters as a "test facility" to bomb, blast and pollute at will.
Local film maker David Bradbury has documented the probable use of depleted uranium there in his movie "Blowing in the Wind." And this the source of Rockhampton's water supply.
"Under Howard there were three war games known as Operations Talisman Sabre and with each year the protests have grown in number, colour and daring," said Graeme.
"Peace Convergence 07 is remembered for the many independent direct actions against army transports, walk-ons to the bombing sites by Christians and the huge (for Yeppoon - over 2000) local involvement in the Peace Parade.
"Coming up is the fourth Talsiman Sabre, the first under Rudd, and it will draw national attention to his craven adherence to the US Alliance and his servile and tax squandering complicity in US wars," said Dunstan
"Now is the time for the peace makers", said Graeme. "Let this mobilisation for peace be broad based, plentiful and passionate."
If you want to be part of it, come to an organising meeting of a local Peace Convergence Mobilisation Group: 3.00 pm Thursday 21 May in the Poinciana Cafe, Station Street Mullum.
"We have in mind to get some fund raising happening for a bus and maybe to create some local action for when the US (nuke) fleet comes sailing south afterwards", said Dunstan.
