Speaking out for Sacking Keelty

Media Release 14 February 2008

Citizens will be calling for the sacking of Australian Federal Police Commissioner, Mick Keelty, at a public place SpeakOut outside AFP HQ in Canberra.

The SpeakOut will take place:

12.30-1.30 pm tomorrow Friday 15 February 2008
AFP HQ, Veterans Park, cnr Bunda & Northbourne Avenue, Braddon, ACT

"Keelty is a shadow that still lingers from the dark days of the Howard regime," said SpeakOut organiser Graeme Dunstan, captain of the itinerant protest vehicle Peacebus.com.

"Commissioner Keelty was the point man executing the roll back of civil liberties in this land and his leadership has created an institutional arrogance with in the AFP and a contempt for the rule of law," he said.

"He gathered to himself and the AFP extraordinary powers of secrecy, citizen surveillance, arrest and detention. And he abused them.

"Let his head roll," said Dunstan. "And let it be a warning to other senior police who think they can destroy hard won civil liberties and return Australians to rule by fear."

The SpeakOut will be an open mike opportunity for Canberra citizens to have their say and be heard by the AFP staff at HQ.
